Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk or a spirited hike, there’s certain to be a trail to meet your needs. Mendocino Headlands State Park, Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail, and Low Gap Park are just a few great destinations for world-class hikes. Other great lesser-known trails are the Peter Douglas Trail, Shakota Trail, Spring Ranch Preserve, Montgomery Woods, and Ecological Staircase. Regardless of your skill level, there are several great hiking options for travelers located just minutes from Agate Cove Inn.

If you are looking for gourmet coffee, tea and freshly baked goods, head to The Waiting Room on Ukiah street which features a turntable and wood stove for a cozy place to relax. Enjoy a scenic drive up the coast to nearby Fort Bragg and wind your way down to Noyo Harbor and check out Princess Seafood for the freshest local catch and live music on some afternoons while you watch the fishing boats and seals come and go. A local favorite, Mendo Jams & Preserves offers a wide selection of all-natural jams, chutneys, dessert sauces, and condiments. For a great breakfast or dinner, MacCallum House Restaurant & Grey Whale Bar-Cafe is popular with locals and visitors alike. MacCallum House serves a seasonal menu of local, organic Northern California-inspired cuisine. Most people know that Mendocino County is known for its great selection of wineries, but it’s more than just wine country it’s also home to some of the areas best craft beers. In fact, the area’s rich beer history dates back to the 1850’s and is also home to the first new brewpub in California since Prohibition. Enjoy a scenic drive and stop by several stand-out breweries along the way. in addition to the more well known breweries in the area we have a few local start ups in Fort Bragg. Overtime Brewing which offers good food and occasional live music and games and the latest addition Tall Guy Brewing. Breweries in the area include Anderson Valley Brewing in Boonville, North Coast Brewing in Fort Bragg, and Ukiah Brewing in Ukiah. Some of our favorite Anderson Valley wineries include Navarro Vineyards, Handley Cellars, Pennyroyal Farm, Bee Hunter Wine, Husch Vineyards, and Goldeneye Winery to name a few.
Skunk Train
Located just nine miles from Agate Cove Inn, the Skunk Train is a historic train that runs through meadows, canyons, and Redwood forests. Also known as the California Western Railroad, the Skunk Train runs steam and diesel-powered trains 40 miles through Redwood forests along Pudding Creek and the Noyo River. During the ride, the tracks cross about 30 bridges and trestles plus two deep mountain tunnels. Originally built by the Fort Bragg Railroad Company, the Skunk Train is one of the most popular attractions in Mendocino County. Considered one of the best family-friendly activities in Mendocino County, the Skunk Train has been rolling through the area for over 130 years.
