Tote Fete on Lansing Street has superb take-out fare - salads, sandwiches on housemade garlic focaccia, and imaginative tasty dishes, plus yummy desserts from its bakery around the corner for a complete picnic or lunch on-the-go.   707-937-3140

The Mendocino Bakery on Lansing Street offers informal fare to enjoy on the deck or inside with a cafe latte, and their pizzeria turns out spinach lasagne and exceptional crusty pizzas, including deep dish pizza by the slice from 11:30 am on.    707-937-0836

Mendo Burger is tucked away behind the Mendocino Bakery on Lansing St. They serve burgers in all incarnations, including beef, chicken, turkey, and 2 kinds of veggie patties. Fries are obligatory when you go to a place like this, and the milk shakes are sinfully good, as well.   707-937-1111

Patterson's Pub on Lansing Street serves classic pub fare - a signature Reuben with traditional Irish corned beef, Shepherd's pie, clam chowder, fresh fish & chips in basil-beer batter to go with local ale. Occasional live music. $$   707-937-4782

Up the watertower stairs on Main Street with the great view overlooking Mendocino Bay and Headlands State Park, the Bay View Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Casual and affordable; outdoor dining, full bar and espresso. $$   707-937-4197

South of Mendocino

Perched cliffside with whitewater and headland views, Chef Stephen Smith of Albion River Inn, creates pan-Pacific and Mediterranean-influenced coastal cuisine, accompanied by an award-winning wine list. $$$$    707-937-4044

Chef Dym's imaginative cuisine at Stevenswood is Mediterranean-inspired, but also reflects his culinary experiences across America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Near East; even the outstanding breads reflect that diversity. $$$$$    707-937-2810

Little River Inn offers ocean view dining, including a weekend champagne brunch, and Chef Silver Canul's creative cuisine in the Garden Room or from a full bar menu in the Whale Watch Lounge; on Tuesdays Mexican food from the Yucatan is a menu highlight. $$$$    707-937-5942

Chef/Owners Tony and Lisa Geer's Ledford House Restaurant sits on a headlands bluff in Albion with panoramic views of the ocean; the food has a Mediterranean influence with Asian and Latin touches, and includes hearty bistro fare. $$$$    707-937-0282

Queenie's Roadhouse Cafe in Elk serves an excellent breakfast until 2pm every day (except Tuesday and Wednesday), and they have lunch entrees as well.

Fort Bragg (8 miles north of Mendocino)

The brew-friendly cooking at the North Coast Brewing Company Tap Room & Grill on Main Street draws a regular crowd for lunch and dinner. Recently named one of the 10 best breweries in the world, so select a fine beer to go with the food (the Carolina BBQ is great!). $$$    707-964-3400

The Restaurant, with its homey atmosphere, has had Chef/Owner Jim Larsen at the helm for the last thirty (!) years, and owes its success and longevity to his classically straightforward approach to cooking. $$$    707-964-9800

Chef Kim Badenhop's Rendezvous Restaurant offers one of the finest dining experiences on the coast in a casual but elegant firelit dining room with a French Country-influenced menu, focusing on fresh seasonal ingredients, accompanied by an award-winning wine list. $$$$    707-964-8142

Mendo Bistro in the historic Company Store in Fort Bragg offers a unique menu, which allows diners to choose their ingredient, preparation method, and choice of sauce. City food, country price is Chef/Owner Nick Petti's motto for this affordable, fun eatery. $$$    707-964-4974

In Noyo Harbor south of Ft. Bragg The Wharf specializes in fresh seafood, chicken, steaks and classic Louie salads. Daily specials and Dungeness crab in season. Full bar and appetizers. $$$    707-964-4283

Chapter & Moon, located in Noyo's North Harbor, sits on the riverbank and views the Noyo Bridge, the river and the ocean. This is a new restaurant featuring classic American food. This is an excellent vantage point from which to watch the reconstruction of the Noyo Bridge. $$

Cafe One features organic and healthy ingredients in their diner. Located on the north side of Fort Bragg at 753 North Main St (Highway One). $$

At Taqueria Ricarda on Oak St, 5 blocks east of Main St, Ricarda serves up authentic Mexican food, along with Cokes imported from Mexico. Her tamales are great, but the adobado (marinated pork) is the best! $$    707-964-8684

Piaci's features excellent pizza, calzones, and foccaccia, served with an assortment of beers from area breweries. Located just off Main St on Redwood Avenue, across the street from Mendo Bistro. $$

On Laurel Street just off Main is the family-owned Headlands Coffeehouse, featuring an espresso bar and excellent coffeehouse cuisine. Live entertainment from jazz to classical offered nightly.   707-964-1987
